Team Ireland has claimed two gold medals on a memorable day at the World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi after outstanding performances from Greta Streimikyte and Orla Comerford.

Streimikyte got Ireland off the mark in the women’s 1500m T13 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for a maiden world title.

Leading from the off, the three-time Paralympian posted a time of 4:39.62, well clear of second-placed Izaskun Oses Ayucar who clocked a season’s best of 4:51.12.

Indeed, the six-athlete race saw three SBs and a personal best for another Spaniard, Susana Guisado Rodriguez (4:58.57).

Comerford made it an Irish double by winning the T13 100m in a championship record.

The Paris Games bronze medallist outshone three previous champions in the field to post a time of 11.88, one hundredth of a second outside her personal best.

The 28-year-old finished ahead of Brazilian Rayane Soares Da Silva, with Kym Crosby of the United States taking bronze.

“It feels amazing,” the Dubliner said. “I feel like all season this was my goal, it’s not one you want to put out there and be like I want gold I want to be champion but I kind of kept my head down I knew that I had to work hard.”

Tomorrow Lana Sutton will contest her first World Championship final in the T38 100m. The newcomer to the team finished fourth in her heat today to ensure her place on the start line.
