The European Parliament has highlighted ongoing challenges many women in Europe face in accessing safe and legal abortion services. It raised concerns about legal and practical barriers in several EU member states and urged these countries to align their abortion laws with international human rights standards. By a vote of 358 in favor, 202 against, and 79 abstentions, the Parliament adopted a resolution calling for legislative reforms to support women’s rights across the EU.

As part of this initiative, Parliament has called on the European Commission to create a voluntary financial mechanism, supported by EU funding, under the ‘My Voice, My Choice’ proposal. This would allow any EU country to provide safe abortion access for individuals who are unable to obtain such services in their home country. The intention is to ensure broader access while respecting each member state’s laws.

MEPs emphasized the EU’s responsibility to promote sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), including family planning, contraception, maternal care, and access to abortion. They voiced strong concern over increasing opposition to women’s rights both within Europe and globally, condemning anti-gender movements and attacks on advocates for gender equality.

Following the vote, Swedish MEP Abir Al-Sahlani described the outcome as a victory for women across Europe. She praised the citizens’ efforts and emphasized the significance of EU institutions listening and acting upon public concerns. According to her, this collaboration between citizens and lawmakers reflects the true spirit of democracy.

Looking ahead, the European Commission has until March 2026 to outline any measures it intends to take in response, whether legislative or not. The vote was prompted by the ‘My Voice, My Choice’ European Citizens’ Initiative, which secured over 1.12 million signatures across more than seven EU countries. The initiative’s organizers had a chance to present their case during a public hearing in December 2025.
