The three presidential candidates will tonight take part in the first televised debate of the campaign.

It will take place on Virgin Media on this, the first full week of campaigning, after nominations closed last Wednesday.

Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys is expected to canvass in Dublin today prior to tonight’s key debate.

Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin is also meeting voters in the capital this morning, following the launch of his campaign yesterday.

While Catherine Connolly is set to focus on preparing for the upcoming TV debate.

RTÉ is also set to host a further debate, although a date has not been set.

As well as the Prime Time debate, RTÉ will host several debates, including on The Week In Politics on Sunday 5 October.

Debates will be expected too in the last two weeks of the campaign, that is a time when the voting public really begins to make-up its mind on which candidate to back.

Polling day is set for Friday 24 October, with the count set to take place on the morning of Saturday 25 October and a result should be known by 9pm that night.
