THE FLAMES ARE lit, the athletes are in situ, and the theatrically spectacular opening ceremony has been staged.
This year’s Winter Olympic Games are officially underway in Milan-Cortina, where almost 3,000 athletes are vying for hundreds of medals across dozens of events.
Four Irish athletes are among those competing: Anabelle Zurbay and Cormac Comerford in Alpine Skiing; Ben Lynch in the Freestyle Skiing Halfpipe event; and Thomas Maloney Westgard in cross-country events.
There are eight sports (with variations within them) listed on the official Winter Olympics website – and it’s safe to say that most Irish people won’t have had the opportunity to try them out before. Maybe some day.
