ORLA COMERFORD MADE it two gold medals in one day for Team Ireland at the World Para Athletics Championships in India.

Following on from Greta Streimikyte claiming first place in the women’s 1500m T13, Comerford clocked a championship record time of 11.88 seconds in the 100m T13 final.

The 28-year-old Dubliner was only just shy of her own personal best as she held off Brazil’s Rayane Soares Da Silva in second place and the USA’s Kym Crosby in third.

“It feels amazing. I feel like all season this was my goal, it’s not one you want to put out there and be like ‘I want gold, I want to be champion’, but I kind of kept my head down I knew that I had to work hard,” she said.

Comerford has been going from strength to strength since the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, where she delivered a standout performance in the T13100m, securing the bronze medal with a time of 11.94 seconds marking her first Paralympic podium finish.

Earlier in the day, three three-time Paralympian Streimikyte posted a time of 4:39.62 to ensure the 30-year-old was first home in the 1500m.

“To be honest I like taking a race on so I just took the opportunity,” she said.

Lana Sutton qualified for the T38 100m final, finishing in fourth place in her heat in a time of 13.01, and will be in action tomorrow.
