New Zealand’s World Cup defence ended with a third-placed finish as they thrashed France in a dominant display at Twickenham.

Playing before England’s final with Canada amid a lively atmosphere, the Black Ferns recovered from France’s early try to lead 26-7 at half-time.

Teenager Braxton Sorensen-McGee crossed twice midway through the second half to finish the tournament with 11 tries and extend her lead in the tournament’s try-scoring chart.

France then scored three late tries to make the scoreline more respectable, but the six-time world champions had the result wrapped up.

“I’m proud of us and the French of how much heart, passion and pride we played with today,” said Black Ferns captain Ruahei Demant.

“There will be a lot more reflection, but this tournament in England – fair play to England for putting on such an incredible tournament.”

New Zealand, who were hoping to win a record-matching third consecutive World Cup, had their 11-year unbeaten streak in the tournament ended by Canada in the pair’s semi-final eight days ago.

Their legendary winger Portia Woodman-Wickliffe, who earlier this tournament became New Zealand’s record try-scorer, was brought to tears by a standing ovation when she was replaced by Katelyn Vaha’akolo in the 57th minute.

The 34-year-old came out of retirement to play for the Black Ferns in the tournament.

As for France, their World Cup ended with a seventh consecutive third-place play-off. They were beaten 35-17 by hosts England in their semi-final in Bristol.

After pulling back Manchester United’s Bryan Mbeumo in front of the Brentford goal, it looked as if Nathan Collins was going to be sent off.

But the Bees defender only received a yellow card at Gtech Community Stadium.

Running on to a dangerous low cross in the 71st minute when Brentford were leading 2-1, Mbeumo was tugged back by Collins in the box.

Referee Craig Pawson awarded Manchester United a penalty and showed Collins a yellow card – a decision which was checked and confirmed by the video assistant referee (VAR).

At first there was confusion, with some fans quick to question why Collins had not received a straight red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

Some asked if it was the ‘double jeopardy’ rule at play, which prevents a player from being punished with both a red card and a penalty kick for a foul that was a genuine attempt to play the ball.

However, the Premier League Match Centre confirmed shortly after the incident that VAR had “deemed that Mbeumo wasn’t in control of the ball”.

“Likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball” is one of the factors listed by the Premier League to consider for an offence denying a goal or clear goalscoring opportunity.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes’ penalty was saved by Caoimhin Kelleher and Brentford went on to win the match 3-1.

“I think he got away with one, Collins. As a centre-forward and a player of that quality all Bryan Mbeumo has to do is put his toe on it,” former Chelsea winger Joe Cole told TNT Sports.

“I feel for the referees, but looking at it again it is clearly a goalscoring opportunity.”

Ex-Tottenham and Stoke City striker Peter Crouch agreed, adding: “I thought it was a red card – it is denying a goalscoring opportunity. Probably lucky to get away with that.”

Britain’s Emma Raducanu and Sonay Kartal claimed straight-set wins to reach the third round of the China Open in Beijing.

British number one Raducanu was tested throughout by unseeded Spaniard Cristina Bucsa but battled to a 6-3 6-3 victory.

Kartal produced a powerful display to see off Australian 14th seed Daria Kasatkina 6-3 6-0 in little under an hour.

Kartal will meet Australian teenager Maya Joint in the last 32, while Raducanu faces American fifth seed Jessica Pegula.

World number 31 Raducanu, the 30th seed, managed only 16 winners to Bucsa’s 28, but maintained the upper hand in the key exchanges.

She saved six break points in a competitive first set before winning the final two games to seemingly take charge of the match.

Raducanu won the opening two games of the second but, after missing the chance to go 3-0 up, was pegged back as Bucsa finally broke serve to draw level at 2-2.

Raducanu broke back immediately and won four of the final five games.

British number three and world number 81 Kartal lost only five games in her first-round victory over Alycia Parks.

She produced an even more polished performance on Saturday, converting six of 11 break points to swat aside world number 20 Kasatkina.

It was Kartal’s third victory this year over an opponent ranked in the top 20.

She will have to upset the odds again against 19-year-old Joint, who has won two WTA titles and is 45 places above Kartal in the rankings.

Top seed Iga Swiatek claimed a comfortable 6-0 6-3 victory over China’s Yue Yuan to set up a third-round match against unseeded Colombian Camila Osorio.

Japan’s Naomi Osaka, who reached the women’s semi-finals of the US Open this month, suffered a shock 6-1 4-6 2-6 defeat by Belarusian world number 130 Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
