SEVEN PEOPLE HAVE been killed on Ireland’s roads this weekend.
Four road deaths have been confirmed today by policing authorities: one in Co Meath, and three in Co Armagh.
In Navan, a man in his 20s was arrested after a teenage girl was struck down while a pedestrian on the Slane Road.
The car involved in the incident failed to remain at the scene, according to gardaí, who have since been able to seize the vehicle for technical and forensic examination.
Emergency services responded at approximately 8:20pm to the incident.
The pedestrian, a 16-year-old girl, was treated at the scene before being transferred to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where she was later pronounced deceased.
“The car involved failed to remain at the scene,” a garda spokesperson said.
The arrested man is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda Station in the Eastern Region.
The Coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged. The scene remains preserved for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local traffic diversions are in place.
Road users with camera footage – including dash-cam – who were travelling in the area between 8:00pm and 8:45pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
In Armagh, three people were killed in a three-vehicle road crash. Police received reports of the crash involving a red BMW, a grey Volkswagen and a white Audi at around 10:20pm.
“Officers attended, along with colleagues from other emergency services, however, two men, aged 31 and 48, and a woman, aged 23, were sadly pronounced deceased at the scene,” a PSNI spokesperson said.
“Four other people sustained injuries, three of whom are receiving medical treatment.”
Road deaths this weekend
It’s been a bad weekend on the country’s roads this weekend, with further fatal crashes in Waterford and Galway.
In Eyrecourt, Co Galway, gardaí and emergency services responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision at Rooaun at around 8:15pm.
The driver and sole occupant of the car, a woman in her 80s, was pronounced deceased at the scene a short time later.
Her body was brought to the mortuary at Portiuncula Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.
The scene remains preserved for technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.
Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was travelling in the area between 7:30pm and 8:30pm to make any footage available to investigators.
Waterford deaths
And in Waterford, a man and a woman in their 40s died after their car was involved in a crash with a van.
Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the incident at Robin Hill involving a van and a car, at approximately 12pm.
Their bodies have been removed to University Hospital Waterford where post-mortem examinations will take place in due course.
A man in his 50s and a male juvenile were in the van and were taken to University Hospital Waterford for treatment of injuries believed to be non life-threatening.
