Re Lucy Mangan’s two-star review for The Hack (TV review, 24 September), I’ve always loved her writing, from her Toryboy columns to her more recent TV criticisms, which, until now, have almost always concurred with my own views. But I was gripped by the first instalment of The Hack and will be watching it to the end. Sorry, Lucy.

Your editorial on the railways (26 September) captured the soul of the age I grew up in. Brief Encounter, Flanders and Swann, The Railway Children, Night Mail, the blinkered nonsense of the Beeching cuts. Thank you for a piece that evokes the spirit of the Guardian – a joy to read.
