THE PSNI HAS said it is investigating reports that a letter warning of “extreme” action against Muslims and nationalists is circulating in a Co Down village.
A PSNI spokesperson noted that the letter is circulating on social media and references the Clough area of Co Down.
The PSNI is treating the incident as a sectarian and Islamophobic hate crime.
The letter states that “drug abuse” and “anti social behaviour” is “not acceptable and will not be tolerated in Clough”.
Clough is a village about six miles from Newcastle in Co Down.
The letter also states that “nationalist culture” and “Islamic culture will not be welcomed” and warns against the “wearing or display of republican / nationalist symbols”.
It adds that such “symbols” include O’Neills clothing and Celtic FC clothing.
The letter states any “reports of the above will be immediately noted and will lead to a swift eviction by forced”.
“In this scenario no warning will be given, both the property and your vehicle’s will be subject to sustained attack,” said the letter.
“Extreme lengths will be taken when called for,” it adds.
The letter also describes Clough as a “loyalist community” and that “great lengths” are taken to “protect children”.
The letter also directs people to “immediately contact” DUP councillor Alan Lewis and describes him as an “independent advisory”.
“Make yourself known to him to ensure a safe and enjoyable settlement into your new home,” adds the letter.
However, Lewis has said that the letter has “nothing whatsoever to do with me”.
He also described the letter as a “malicious communication designed to mislead and cause concern”.
He added that he was “unaware of its circulation until it was brought to my attention”.
Lewis said the letter had been delivered to some households in the area to “intimidate” people.
“I totally reject its contents and make clear my rejection of it,” said Lewis.
He added that he has “referred this matter to the PSNI” and remarked that “threats and intimidation can play no part in the democratic process”.
“As a local Councillor I am always available to work for all my constituents and to help everyone with the issues of concern to them.
“Anyone with information on those responsible should contact the PSNI.”
