Kane passes Haaland and Ronaldo in reaching 100 mark

Harry Kane scored his 100th goal for Bayern Munich on Friday night, reaching his century in a remarkable 104 matches.

The England captain was on target twice in a 4-0 home win over Werder Bremen, taking him to three figures and extending Bayern’s 100% record after five Bundesliga outings.

In doing so Kane has nudged ahead of Erling Haaland and Cristiano Ronaldo, who took 105 matches to reach three figures for Manchester City and Real Madrid respectively.

Kane, who ended his long association with Tottenham to join Bayern in 2023, is now the 19th player to hit the hundred for the club.

Bayern were already one ahead through Jonathan Tah when he slammed home a penalty on the stroke of half-time – his 18th successful spot-kick from as many attempts. Kane moved from 99 to 100 with a smart finish 20 minutes into the second half.

Kane was substituted with 12 minutes to go, denying him the chance of a second straight hat-trick after putting three past Hoffenheim, but Konrad Laimer did pop up to make it four.

Derry draw at Drogheda to deny title Hoops coronation

Drogheda United and Derry City couldn’t be separated at Sullivan & Lambe Park but a point for the Foylesiders means Shamrock Rovers must wait a little bit longer for their inevitable 22nd League of Ireland title success.

Dare Kareem’s first half strike, a superb volley for his second goal on home soil in just four days, had United in control. If there was a winner, they would have been deserving of it. Danny Mullen’s 54th minute goal proved enough to earn a point for the visitors.

As expected, there were changes on both sides. Drogheda reintroduced Conor Kane, Darragh Markey and on-loan Swansea City striker Josh Thomas to the starting XI.

Derry were not in action on Monday, but from their last outing – also against Shelbourne – they were without Alex Bannon and Dipo Akinyemi through injury. Both are expected to miss the remainder of the season.

Defender Sam Todd was absent from the matchday squad too, although Ronan Boyce did at least return from suspension. Hayden Cann also started in defence, against his former club.

Derry wing-back Brandon Fleming produced a moment of quality, driving past his opposite number Owen Lambe on the inside and advancing towards the area before drilling a low shot straight at Luke Dennison.

Adam O’Reilly and Sadou Diallo both took aim from range too but neither attempt worked the goalkeeper. The first narrowly wide, the second blocked by Andy Quinn’s boot.

Kareem’s goal came on 39 minutes. When Derry cleared a Drogheda free-kick, Kevin Doherty’s team recycled the ball to devastating effect.

Shane Farrell’s ball into the area was chested down by Conor Keeley. That knock-down was perfect for Kareem to meet it, volleying through a crowd of players and past goalkeeper Brian Maher.

Just days after his goal against Shelbourne, he continues to prove Drogheda’s unlikely man for the big occasion as the season edges towards its conclusion.

If Drogheda do earn an unlikely shot at Europe again via the league, the teenager – a complete unknown even to most United supporters a couple of months ago – will have made a major contribution.

Mullen’s goal pulled Derry level for a brief spell, it gave them a degree of urgency lacking before then.

The equaliser came at the end of a lightning break. Drogheda had conceded possession in midfield. The ball was worked through O’Reilly and Michael Duffy before Dennison kept out Fleming’s effort but could do nothing about Mullen’s.

Both sides struck the goal frame after that. Warren Davis – somehow – didn’t add to his seven goal this term as the post and a couple of Derry defenders denied him. Mullen almost had a second. He beat Dennison with a fiercely struck shot, but not the upright.

Drogheda United: Luke Dennison; James Bolger, Conor Keeley, Andrew Quinn; Owen Lambe, Ryan Brennan, Shane Farrell (Luke Heeney, 65), Conor Kane; Darragh Markey; Josh Thomas (Jack Stretton, 87), Dare Kareem (Warren Davis, 70).

Derry City: Brian Maher; Hayden Cann, Mark Connolly (Cameron Dummigan, 79), Jamie Stott; Ronan Boyce, Sadou Diallo, Carl Winchester, Brandon Fleming; Adam O’Reilly, Michael Duffy; Danny Mullen (Gavin Whyte, 86).

Referee: Rob Harvey

Galway United pick up first league win in three months to edge Cork City closer to drop

GALWAY UNITED PICKED up their first league victory in three months at Eamonn Deacy Park on Friday night as they edged Cork City closer to the drop.

In this crucial relegation six-pointer, both sides started on the front foot. Stephen Walsh was the first to go close for the home side following a Jimmy Keohane corner in the seventh minute.

Moments later, Sean Maguire saw his long-range effort comfortably saved by Evan Watts in the United goal.

Former Cork City man Keohane was next to go close for the hosts after he found himself beyond the City defence. The Kilkenny native saw his effort saved by Conor Brann, however.

The 2023 First Division champions took the lead in the 19th minute. Walsh headed home from close range following a flick-on header from Patrick Hickey in the away side’s penalty area.

Walsh was appearing for the Tribesmen for the 368th time, equaling Kevin Kassidy’s all-time appearance record for the club.

With just over five minutes remaining in the half, Keohane almost doubled the home side’s lead but his long-range effort went agonisingly wide.

Against the run of play, Gerard Nash’s side incredibly levelled the game in the 42nd minute. Alex Nolan picked up the ball following a Galway corner. Nolan weaved his way through the Galway half and rifled a shot from outside the box into the back of the net.

The westerners, though, didn’t drop their heads, and they re-took the lead on the stroke of half-time. Local man Walsh found the back of the net for a second time from a header following a fine cross by Dara McGuinness,.

United went in 2-1 up at the break.

They started the second half in the ascendancy but failed to test Brann in the Cork goal in the early stages of the half.

Just before the 10th minute of the half, Walsh went close to scoring his third goal from a header following a cross from the right flank, but to the relief of Brann, his effort went just went wide.

Hickey was the next to go close for the Tribesmen but his header flashed wide following good play down the left flank by Bobby Burns and Keohane.

With just over 20 minutes remaining, Maguire went close for the Rebel Army, but his effort off his left foot went over the bar.

Despite being on top for much of the contest, United were forced to defend strongly in the final quarter, and they held on for a valuable three points.
