Israel’s clubs and national teams could be suspended by UEFA next week.
As first reported by The Times of London, it is understood plans are being put in place to hold an extraordinary meeting next week of UEFA’s executive committee to discuss this topic, though nothing has yet been firmly scheduled.
Israel, which has been a full member of UEFA since 1994, has faced growing international criticism over its attacks on Gaza, which were sparked by the 7 October, 2023 attacks by Hamas inside Israel.
Earlier this month, a report published by an independent UN commission concluded that Israel has committed, and continues to commit, genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
The move to ban Israel has support within UEFA’s member associations, with Irish Sport for Palestine making a similar call, alongside League of Ireland club Bohemians, last week.
Any move by UEFA to suspend Israel may prove a difficult one politically for FIFA, whose president Gianni Infantino has a close relationship with United States president Donald Trump. The US will co-host next summer’s World Cup.
A spokesman for the US state department told Sky News on Thursday: “We will absolutely work to fully stop any effort to attempt to ban Israel’s national soccer team from the World Cup.”
Israel are currently third in their qualifying group behind Norway and Italy, while the country has one club remaining in European competition, Maccabi Tel Aviv.
FIFA has faced long-standing calls from the Palestinian Football Association to suspend Israel, most recently at its Congress in Paraguay in May.
“Our issue is stuck in a highly politicised, bureaucratic holding pattern, not unlike the suffering of our people – visible, undeniable, but sadly ignored,” a PFA delegate said.
“We must all realise that by delaying the decision, FIFA will be seen to be supporting the illegal settlements.”
Infantino assured the PFA that “work has started” to examine its complaints, with general secretary Mattias Grafstrom adding that FIFA’s independent committees “should be afforded the opportunity to appropriately inform themselves on the matter prior to the final outcome”.
United Nations rapporteurs called on FIFA and UEFA to suspend Israel earlier this week, and said in a statement: “Sports must reject the perception that it is business as usual.
“Sporting bodies must not turn a blind eye to grave human rights violations, especially when their platforms are used to normalise injustices.”
UEFA declined to comment. The Israeli FA has been approached for a response.

Keane, 19, joined Women’s Super League outfit Leicester City from Shamrock Rovers in the summer.
On Wednesday afternoon she completed a seven-day emergency loan move to Championship side Sheffield United, who were short in the goalkeeping department after losing both Sian Rogers and Charlotte Parker-Smith to injury.
Keane went straight into the team for the cup clash and made an instant impact.
Joy Ralph – who left Shamrock Rovers for the Blades around the same time Keane joined Leicester – put the visitors ahead at Maiden Castle Sports Park with a good finish in the 18th minute.
Durham equalised just before half-time, but they couldn’t be separated after that, with the game going to a shootout.
Keane made saves to deny Beth Hepple and Becky Salicki to swing it for the Blade. Afterwards she reflected on a whirlwind 24 hours.
“I’m absolutely delighted,” Keane told Sheffield United club media.
“It’s some debut. To think that I haven’t actually been a Sheffield player until about four hours ago, that’s just the fun of it you know?
“The penos, thank God I saved them. The game was really, really good and I’m really proud of all the girls and the youngsters who came on and put in a really good shift.”
Keane, who first broke through at Athlone Town, will be hoping her performance caught the attention of Republic of Ireland boss Carla Ward ahead of next month’s Nations League play-off against Belgium.
She was included in Eileen Gleeson’s senior squad for last year’s Euro 2025 play-off semi-final against Georgia, but has not been called up since.
