Shane Lowry’s grandmother has said she was not able to watch the final moments of the Ryder Cup last night.
“I just shut my eyes and then I heard the roar and I knew,” said Emily Scanlon.
The proud grandmother was at home in Clara this afternoon, still taking in what unfolded last night.
Inside the house, photos of Shane Lowry and his achievements over the years hang on the kitchen wall.
He is one of Emily Scanlon’s 33 grandchildren.
“I’m so proud. I’m top of the world, I’m feeling great for all the family,” she said.
“We’re living in a terrible world and you need a lift like this.”
Ms Scanlon recalled her grandson starting out playing golf.
“It all started here. I can still see him on his blue bike and his granddad had his clubs tied to it and him heading off to Esker Hills,” she said.
When asked what she will say to her grandson when she sees him again, Ms Scanlon was quick to respond.
“I will put my arms around him and give him a big hug. He’s a great lad,” she said.
“He’s never forgotten where he comes from. He loves the GAA, he loves his county and he loves Clara.
“He’ll get a great welcome when he comes back here.”
