House of Guinness is now available on Netflix and one of the most captivating characters in this historical drama is Sean Rafferty, portrayed by Happy Valley’s star James Norton.

The series, crafted by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, narrates the tale of the Guinness siblings and their journey to uphold their father’s legacy following his demise.

Sean Rafferty holds the position of foreman at the Guinness factory, serving as a liaison between the Guinness siblings and their allies and adversaries.

He is fiercely loyal to the Guinness family, yet he maintains his authority as a leader, and English actor Norton has done an exceptional job mastering the Irish accent.

During a Q&A session after a screening of the series, Norton confessed his apprehension, stating: “As an English person on this set, it was terrifying as it’s mostly an Irish cast.

“Emily [Fairn] obviously had an amazing accent and Louis [Partridge]. The three of us were in the minority of non-Irish people.

“The Irish are a proud lot, they have a very strong identity, and you know those actors who have f***** it up and they were crucified.

“So you are aware of the stakes, so we worked hard and we had a brilliant dialect coach who was there in my ear, reading out these very strange poems and bits of text.

“And I had these guys [rest of the cast] kindly bringing me back when I was going awry.”

Irish actor Anthony Boyle, who portrays Arthur Guinness in the series, commended his English co-stars for their meticulous attention to the accents.

He praised: “James, Emily and Louis were fantastic with the accent and they took so much care and so much love. They knew it was something they needed to get right.”

Despite many characters in the series being based on real historical figures, Rafferty is a fictional character.

Executive producer Ivana Lowell confirmed this while discussing the final casting decisions.

She expressed: “I love the Rafferty character. I told James Norton that I completely made him up. He wasn’t a real person, but he was perfect. He’s so good. They’re all so good, all of them. I’m thrilled.”
