Europe make stunning start to Ryder Cup to lead 3-1

Europe drew first blood as they opened up a 3-1 lead after a stunning performance on the opening morning of the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.
The defending champions shut out the noise of a raucous and partisan New York crowd to put the United States on the back foot on a day President Donald Trump was due to visit.
Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton led the way as they came from behind to beat Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas in the first foursomes match 4&3.
The heavyweight ‘Fleetwood Mac’ pairing of Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood then saw off Collin Morikawa and Harris English in convincing fashion 5&4.
Matt Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Aberg were similarly impressive as they claimed a shock 5&4 win over world number one Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley.
The only blot on the European scorecard was the two down defeat suffered by Robert MacIntyre and Vitkor Hovland against Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay in the fourth match.
Nevertheless, it was still a fine start for Luke Donald’s side as they began their quest for a first away win since 2012.
It was the first time the continental team had won the opening session of a Ryder Cup on American soil since 2004.
Their superb performance certainly quietened the home crowd after much had been made of the hostile reception the visitors were likely to encounter.
There were even rumblings of discontent as it became increasingly likely Europe would register first on the scoreboard.
The match had begun in fiery enough atmosphere with the crowd, whipped up prior to the start by US captain Keegan Bradley, in good voice in the 5,000-capacity grandstand at the first tee.
Rahm, addressing the ball amid the cacophony, hit a wayward first shot while DeChambeau, treated to relative silence, smashed a superb straight drive.
That enabled the American pair to win that first hole but the Europeans settled as the crowd began to disperse around the course.
Rahm and Hatton struggled early on but halved the next five holes and then had a close call after the Spaniard drove into the trees on the seventh.
Hatton came close to disturbing the ball as he stepped on a branch but no penalty was called and he hit a brilliant approach to allow Rahm to level the match. They then won the eighth to take the lead and did not look back.
Fleetwood’s brilliant iron play carried him and McIlroy to a convincing victory. They were five up after eight and lost only one hole all morning.
Scheffler and Henley also had no answer to the accuracy of Fitzpatrick and the Yorkshireman and Aberg were rarely troubled.
That left Schauffele and Cantlay to provide the only bright spark for the US but even they, having led by three after 11, needed to dig deep after being pegged back to level with three to play.
It left Bradley with much to ponder ahead of the afternoon fourballs matches.
“We just had the president fly over on Air Force One, so I have a feeling things are going to turn,” he told a TV reporter.
Trump was expected to arrive at Bethpage before the afternoon session. Security at the course had been tightened considerably ahead of his visit.

O’Reilly signs new Man City deal & Savinho close on new terms

Midfielder Nico O’Reilly has signed a new contract at Manchester City until 2030 and the club are close to agreeing a new long-term deal with winger Savinho.
City’s injury crisis last season allowed 20-year-old O’Reilly to break through into the first team, with the majority of his 21 appearances coming at the unfamiliar position of left-back.
He has featured in six of City’s game so far this season and the new deal has the option of being extended for a further years.
“This is a day I will never forget,” said O’Reilly. “I have been at City since the age of eight, and to have made it into the first team and have played matches is a dream come true. To be rewarded with a new contract really is special.
“I am really proud and so is my mum! She has sacrificed so much to get me to where I am today, so I am just as happy for her as I am for myself.
“But in truth, this is just the beginning for me. I have come so far, but I want to keep pushing now, improving every day, and become the best player I can be.”
Savinho ‘will be a top player’ for City
Savinho, 21, joined from French side Troyes for £30.8m in 2024, playing 48 games in all competitions and scoring three goals.
During the summer, Tottenham had opened talks to sign Savinho, but City sources said they were not looking to sell the player.
The Brazil international has made four appearances this season, scoring in Wednesday’s 2-0 Carabao Cup win at Huddersfield.
Speaking before City’s Premier League game against Burnley on Saturday, boss Pep Guardiola said Savinho will become an important player once he improves on his output.
“For the people up front, it is always about numbers – goals and assists,” he added. “Savinho created a lot last season but in the final third, the final moment he was a little bit too hectic.
“But the moment he learns that, because he is so young, the more he improves, he will be a top-class player because he can play on both sides, he has got the speed and the work ethic.
“Savio will make this step, naturally it will come and he will be a top player for Man City.”

Slot confirms financial gesture to Diogo Jota’s family

Liverpool’s owners will pay the final two years of the late Diogo Jota’s contract to his family, according to Reds manager Arne Slot.
The Portugal striker died aged 28 in a car crash with his brother Andre Silva on 3 July, just 11 days after the father of three had married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso.
Reports in Portugal at the time suggested Fenway Sports Group had committed to paying out the rest of Jota’s deal, which would have run until the end of the 2026-27 season, in full to support his family.
And in an interview with TNT Sports, Slot has confirmed that to be the case, as he revealed: “I said how proud I felt about how the fans reacted and the ownership…
“Owners are mainly criticised, like managers, but the way they’ve handled this situation by paying his wife and his children all the money from the contract is – maybe people think it’s normal, but it is not in football.”
Slot also commended Liverpool’s supporters for how they reacted to Jota’s death, adding: “How many flowers there were, all the memorials, I can almost get emotional thinking about it.
“It’s unbelievable what our fans have done and our players as well, the way they have conducted themselves in and around the funeral.
“And then we have to train again. There are moments where I feel ‘what must his wife and his children feel now?’ It sounds so hard but our life continues.”
