EBERECHI EZE GOT his first Arsenal goal as Mikel Arteta’s men laboured to beat League One Port Vale 2-0 in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

After Eze struck just eight minutes into the match this should have turned into a comfortable night for the Gunners against a side who, despite back-to-back wins sit 19th in the third tier, but they struggled to create clear chances until substitute Leandro Trossard finished it off in the 86th minute.

Still it was enough for Arsenal, semi-finalists last season, to progress as they seek to win this competition for only a third time.

Roared on by the biggest Vale Park crowd this century, 16,326-strong, Port Vale came charging out of the traps in the opening five minutes, but no sooner had Arsenal got a foothold in the game they led through Eze’s first goal since his £60million move from Crystal Palace.

Arsenal made the goal look easy as Bukayo Saka won back possession and switched play to the left. Myles Lewis-Skelly’s dummy wrong-footed Jesse Debrah as Gabriel Martinelli’s low ball left Eze with a simple close-range finish.

Eze was part of a strong Gunners side featuring nine changes from Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City as Saka returned to the starting XI after a hamstring injury, Christian Norgaard made his first start and there was a debut in goal for Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The last time these two sides met 27 years ago Arsenal needed penalties to win an FA Cup third-round replay here, having been held goalless at Highbury, and despite Arsenal taking an early lead here this turned into another tough scrap against determined opposition.

For all their possession – 78 per cent in the first half – Arteta’s men struggled to carve out clear opportunities as the hosts defended in numbers.

Just as they did in the first half, Port Vale start the second half on the front foot but they were then almost hit on the counter-attack as goalkeeper Joe Gauci had to come racing out of his box to take the ball from Martinelli’s feet.

Having seen his side fail to build on their early lead, Arteta turned to 15-year-old Max Dowman, who replaced Saka just after the hour to chants of ‘He’s got school in the morning’ from the 3,000 travelling Arsenal fans.

Viktor Gyokeres and Gabriel soon followed him into the fray but Arsenal’s immediate concerns were at the back.

A wayward pass from Christhian Mosquera went straight to Ben Garrity on the edge of the Arsenal box. He laid it off for Rhys Walters, but a moment’s hesitation allowed Arsenal to get back in numbers.

Next, substitute Devante Cole hit a dipping shot from the edge of the box that went narrowly over.

Gyokeres should have killed it off in the 78th minute, played through on goal by Dowman, but he took too long and Cam Humphreys slid in to block.

But then, with time running down, William Saliba launched a long ball forward which Trossard controlled neatly as he cut inside to beat Gauci with a low finish as home fans appealed in vain for what would have been a tight offside call.

Why ‘Wood has to watch his back’ as Igor Jesus shines

Eyebrows were raised when Nottingham Forest’s teamsheet dropped for their first European game in 29 years – and Chris Wood was on the bench.

After all, it was the New Zealand forward’s 20 Premier League goals last season that helped propel Forest back into Europe.

Instead, head coach Ange Postecoglou put his trust in Igor Jesus, the 24-year-old who cost £10m from Botafogo in July.

And in Forest’s Europa League opener, it did not take long for the Brazil striker to show why he could prove to be one of the Premier League’s most exciting additions.

With his side trailing 1-0 to Real Betis in Seville, Igor Jesus levelled with a tap-in before heading Forest into a 2-1 lead from a corner less than five minutes later.

But former Manchester United forward Antony levelled in the 85th minute to deny Forest a victory in the first of eight league phase games.

But what now for Wood, who was an unused substitute? And will Igor Jesus keep his place in the starting XI?

“Chris Wood definitely has to watch his back,” said former Forest and West Ham forward Michail Antonio on TNT Sports.

Modern-day Drogba?

Igor Jesus celebrated both goals against Betis by dropping to his knees and pointing to the sky.

In an action-packed performance, he had six of Forest’s 16 attempts, of which three were on target.

Full of energy and running, he could have had a first-half hat-trick but his goalbound attempt – after Elliot Anderson’s brilliant jinking run – was blocked before Postecoglou decided to replace him in the 64th minute.

The 5,000 travelling Forest fans, in Seville to see their team’s first competitive European match since 1996, gave Igor Jesus a standing ovation when he came off.

“He definitely looks like a real threat,” added Antonio.

“He even had a couple of other opportunities, half opportunities he took quite well as well. His movement, his hold-up play… he seems big, he seems strong.”

Igor Jesus made his Brazil debut last October, scoring in a 2-1 World Cup qualifying win in difficult conditions in Chile.

In June, he scored Botafogo’s winner against European champions Paris St-Germain at the Club World Cup, with his performance in that game prompting South American football expert Tim Vickery to label him the modern-day version of former Ivory Coast and Chelsea striker Didier Drogba.

“For Ange tonight – what a shout,” said former Forest and England midfielder Steve Hodge on BBC Radio Nottingham about Postecoglou’s decision to start with Igor Jesus and put Wood on the bench.

“Igor Jesus has made his mark tonight.”

Having scored twice against Swansea City in the Carabao Cup last week, Igor Jesus now has four goals in two starts for his new club.

Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, who impressed against Betis, believes the Brazilian could be a key figure for the team this season.

“He’s always in the right position, which is obviously a big thing for a striker,” he told TNT Sports. “He’s done well and got two goals and two goals the other week, so he’s doing really well and we see it in training. I’m really happy for Igor.”

‘Wood will not be happy’

Wood has been phenomenal for Forest since turning his loan from Newcastle into a permanent move in 2023.

Only Mohamed Salah (29), Alexander Isak (23) and Erling Haaland (22) scored more goals in the Premier League than Wood last season.

He started this season from where he left off last term with two goals in the 3-1 opening weekend win over Brentford under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Wood, 33, has also started both Premier League games since Postecoglou replaced Nuno – the 3-0 defeat at Arsenal and the 1-1 draw at Burnley.

But it remains to be seen whether he will return to side for the visit of Sunderland on Saturday (17:30 BST) – Postecoglou’s first in charge of Forest at the City Ground.

“From Chris’ point of view, he won’t be happy tonight – he will be want to be out there in big games like this,” added Hodge on BBC Radio Nottingham.

Meanwhile, Postecoglou remains without a win after four games in charge despite Wednesday’s largely positive performance.

After defeats by Arsenal in the league and Swansea City in the EFL Cup, followed by a draw at Burnley, Wednesday’s performance was much more upbeat and Forest were set to mark their return to Europe with a win until Antony’s late equaliser.

“I thought our football was outstanding at times in the first half,” said Postecoglou.

“The thing I could fault is we didn’t put the game to bed. I’m just disappointed that the players and supporters don’t get the rewards for our efforts.

“I’ve just got to make sure they keep their heads up because there’s plenty to be positive about, and the wins will come.”

Celtic pegged back in Belgrade while Antony denies Nottingham Forest in Europa League

CELTIC MANAGER BRENDAN Rodgers praised the impact of Kelechi Iheanacho after the half-time substitute netted in a 1-1 draw against Red Star Belgrade in the opening game of the Europa League.

The post deadline-day signing replaced Daizen Maeda at half-time after the Japan international struggled in the centre-forward role in Serbia.

Celtic had failed to make any chances from open play by half-time but they immediately improved, forcing three saves before Iheanacho took an excellent touch in the box and stroked the ball into the top corner in the 55th minute.

On the performance of Maeda, who was denied a summer move because of the club’s failure to source an adequate replacement, Rodgers told BT Sport: “He wasn’t at his best, or nowhere near it. However, he’s a good guy and sometimes that happens in the game.

“I could have made a couple of changes at half-time. I wanted to make that one certainly to give us that greater reference at the top of the pitch. I thought Kels coming in was very, very good for us.

“We needed someone centrally to hold the ball up. I felt that we arrived into the final third in the first half and then we were either loose with the ball or didn’t hold the ball up.

“It’s one of Kels’ great strengths. He can take the ball in, he can use his body well and obviously allows you to progress up the pitch. So he gave us a really much better platform in the second half.”

Celtic could not build on the opening goal and Marko Arnautovic scrambled the ball home from a corner 10 minutes later.

But they held firm from some aerial pressure and Rodgers was pleased with the point against a side who, like Celtic, also suffered a shock Champions League play-off defeat after competing in Europe’s elite competition last season.

“This is a good point for this squad of players and for us coming here,” he said.

“You come here, to a team that’s obviously won all of their domestic games, seven out of seven, coming to Belgrade is always a tough game.

“We had opportunities in the second half in particular. But we showed great resilience and showed moments of quality.

“Kels’ goal was absolutely outstanding and we had other moments in the second half.

“I still want us to be a little bit more proactive in the game. But overall, it was a nice first step for us in the competition.”

Elsewhere in the Europa League, Evan Ferguson came off the bench for the final 20 minutes as AS Roma beat Nice 2-1 in France.

Nottingham Forest’s first European match in nearly 30 years ended in a 2-2 draw as Manchester United flop Antony’s late strike extended boss Ange Postecoglou’s wait for his maiden victory in charge.

The two-time European Cup winners are back in continental competition for the first time since the 1995/96 season and kicked off the league phase with their toughest-looking assignment.

Forest showed spirit and skill in Seville, where Igor Jesus’ brace put them on course for a memorable victory as the visitors reacted impressively to Cedric Bakambu’s 15th-minute opener.

The Brazil striker turned in Morgan Gibbs-White’s low ball in the 18th minute and sparked further bedlam in the away end five minutes later when heading home a Douglas Luiz corner.

Forest should have gone further ahead before the break and then held firm amid building Betis pressure until five minutes from time, when Antony followed up his earlier assist by levelling for last season’s Conference League runners-up.

It was a late gut punch that denied Postecoglou a first victory since succeeding popular Nuno Espirito Santo, but the Australian will take heart from the opening game of a competition he won with Tottenham 18 weeks ago.
