Budget 2026: One social welfare scheme set for €196 increase

As the cost of living crisis continues to affect Ireland, many families under financial strain are waiting to see what measures will be included in Budget 2026.
The Budget will be announced on October 7 but this year is expected to be very different from the packages announced in recent years which saw tax cuts and lump sum payments to combat the cost of living crisis.
The Budget Day package will comprise of spending of €7.9 billion and taxation measures amounting to €1.5 billion, with overall spending across current capital set to increase by 7.3 per cent for next year. Universal cost of living measures like the energy credits will not be part of this year’s package, reports RSVP Live.
Instead, the Government is expected to deliver more targeted measures. The Fuel Allowance, a payment designed to assist with the cost of heating your home during the colder winter and spring months, is set to see a significant increase.
This payment is expected to rise by approximately €196 in the budget, according to the Irish Independent. The aim is to help pensioners and people with disabilities to cope with rising heating bills.
The Fuel Allowance is set to increase by €7 per week, resulting in an overall increase of €196. Those eligible receive the payment for 28 weeks of the year.
An expansion of the eligibility criteria for the payment is also on the table. The Fuel Allowance season typically starts in late September and ends in April.
The 2025/2026 Fuel Allowance season commenced on Monday, 22 September and will be paid for 28 weeks, until April 2026. The existing rate of Fuel Allowance stands at €33 per week, with the option to receive the payment weekly or in two lump sums.

The former leader of Reform UK in Wales has pleaded guilty to bribery charges relating to statements in favour of Russia while being an elected member of the European Parliament.
Gill, 52, from Llangefni on Anglesey, admitted eight counts of bribery between 6 December 2018 and 18 July 2019, but denied one charge of conspiracy to commit bribery.
He served as a UKIP and Brexit Party MEP between 2014 and 2020, and was leader of UKIP Wales between 2014 and 2016, and then leader of Reform UK Wales between March and May 2021.
The court was told the guilty pleas were “satisfactory” because the bribery charges reflected the criminal activities.
