Works to ensure all visitors to Leinster House are able to access the building independently are set to cost €180,000.

The Office of Public Works (OPW) has insisted that this covers the project in its entirety and includes a contingency fund.

The work, which will see two new lifts installed, will result in improved access from the North Road entrance to Leinster House which leads to the main restaurant.

This room is used by visitors, TDs, senators, guests, parliamentarians from other countries and ambassadors.

A chairlift that was previously installed in this area is no longer working and was removed.

The upgrades will also focus on improving fire safety and electrical systems in this part of the building.

At the moment, level access is only available at the rear of Leinster House which, Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran believes is unacceptable.

“We must ensure the highest standard of access is provided to all, with ease and dignity,” he said.

Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy said last year alone there were more than 68,000 visitors to Leinster House and she welcomes the work the OPW is about to commence in the coming weeks.

“It will provide the necessary independent access for all occupants and visitors to our national parliament,” she said.
