Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Skylar Thompson was ‘jumped and robbed’ in Dublin city centre on Friday night, according to reports.

The backup quarterback travelled with the team despite being on injured reserve, but was robbed on Friday night and suffered minor injuries. NFL insider Tom Pelissero was the first to break the news.

He said: “The Steelers’ trip to Dublin wasn’t without some drama: Sources say backup QB Skylar Thompson got jumped and robbed Friday night in Dublin. Thompson, who is on injured reserve, suffered minor injuries but is OK and with the team.”

Steelers Spokesman Burt Lauten said they were aware of the incident. He said: “We are aware of a situation involving Skylar Thompson on Friday night in Dublin. We will have no further comment at this time as we are working with NFL security to gather more information regarding the incident.”

Gardai have been contacted for comment.

The Steelers face the Minnesota Vikings in Croke Park at 2:30 p.m., and some 76,000 people are expected to pack into GAA HQ for the game. It is the first NFL regular-season game to take place in Ireland.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been staying at Carton House in Kildare and training on site, while their opponents have been staying in the plush Shelbourne Hotel and using Sport Ireland’s Abbotstown as their base.
